A Brief History of Woodridge Baptist Church

Woodridge Baptist Church began as the dream of a downtown Mobile church known as Oakdale Baptist Church. For many years Oakdale had been one of Mobile's strongest Baptist churches. The 1970's brought many changes to Mobile. One of those changes saw much of the membership of Oakdale moving from the historic Mobile area. One of the dreams of Oakdale church under the leadership of pastor Dr. Rodney Taylor was to forge a new work in what was then remote west Mobile County. The church approved the establishment of this new work on July 24, 1977. The first services were held on October 16, 1977, with the new mission site called Oakhill Baptist Chapel.

Several mobile home units were used during those early days for Sunday School and worship. The first permanent building was dedicated in October of 1980. Fifteen years later in 1995 a two story Educational wing was added.

Another downtown church closed in 1983. Ann Street Baptist Church sold its property and joined with those meeting at Oakhill. They chose a new name. Woodridge was selected as the identity for the church. Rev. Bob Vereen had been serving as pastor of Ann Street, and was called as pastor of Woodridge where he served for seven years. Dr. Alan Damron served as pastor from June 1992 until January of 2000. Both of these men laid great foundations for the work of a great church.

Dr. Mack Morris became pastor in July of 2000. It was his dream to pick up on the vision of the early founders to have a church in west Mobile that would be a lighthouse for all in this fast growing area. Building upon the foundations laid by Taylor, Vereen and Damron, that dream quickly became reality.

During the space of a year buildings that had been planned were completed. A new Worship Center seating 1,575 was dedicated on October 5, 2003. A new Educational Building was dedicated on February 1, 2004. The old Worship Center built in 1980 was totally renovated and dedicated on May 2, 2004. With the addition of these new facilities came numerical and financial growth.

Today that dream continues with a group of dedicated believers meeting at what is affectionately known as “The Church On The Hill.” They have found “It is A Place You Can Call Home.”
